Let's dig deeper.

Leadership: Boss or Leader

Here is a simple little exercise. For the next week, keep track of how many times you use the term “I” and how many times you use the term “we.”

Are you a boss or a leader?

The boss drives his workers; the leader coaches them.
The boss depends on authority; the leader on goodwill.
The boss inspires fear; the leader enthusiasm
The boss says “I”; the leader, “we.”
The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown.
The boss knows how it is done; the leader shows how.
The boss says, “Go”; the leader, “Let’s go!”

This is an excellent description of what leadership should be, and a great example of the way we should be leading our teams. It also explains why I actually left a job I loved after 14 years. I saw the direction the new leadership was leaning, and decided it was simply time to say good-bye. If the boss is not willing to work along side the rest of the team, WE lose sight of what the team can achieve. After all, there is no “I” in team. Thank you for sharing, Jason!
